Step 1: Be 21 or older

Texas Labor Code §51.016 says a sexually oriented business may not employ, or contract with, anyone younger than 21. It has applied since 2021, and it covers independent contractors as well as employees.

You may still see 18 on the City of Houston's permit page and on some clubs' websites. Both rules apply, and the state's is the stricter one, so plan on 21.

Step 2: Have your ID ready

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth: a driver's license or ID card from any state, or a passport. The same law requires the club to keep a copy of that ID on file, and to check every employee and independent contractor through E-Verify, the federal system for confirming you are eligible to work in the United States.

The club keeps a copy. Your original stays with you. Our guide to a healthy club workplace explains why that matters.

Step 3: Get your City of Houston entertainer permit

Houston's sexually oriented business ordinance makes it unlawful to work as an entertainer without a city permit, and puts the duty on the club to make sure every entertainer has one. Working as an independent contractor doesn't change that. The rule covers anyone who works as an entertainer.

  • Where: in person at the Houston Permitting Center, 1002 Washington Avenue, 1st floor (Administration & Regulatory Affairs). The city lists weekday hours of 8 AM to 4 PM; the ordinance itself says applications are taken until 3 PM, so go early.
  • What to bring: the completed Sexually Oriented Business Entertainer and Manager application, a national criminal background check, and payment. The city takes cash or debit and credit cards. Check the current fee on the city's permit page before you go.
  • Background check: your fingerprint background check has to pass before the permit is issued. Certain criminal convictions disqualify an applicant; the city's application lists them.
  • How long it takes: the city says 2 to 5 business days.
  • How long it lasts: two years, renewed the same way. The permit is issued to you personally and can't be used by anyone else. If you move, the city has to be told your new address within ten days.
  • Two cards: keep your personal card on you whenever you are working, and give the on-site card to the manager in charge to hold while you are at the club.

You need the permit before you work a shift. Ask the club whether it wants to see it at your audition or before your first night.

Step 4: Apply at Knockouts Houston

You can apply online with the entertainer application, email jobs@knockoutshouston.com, or come in person to 2425 Mangum Road. Applications go straight to management, not to a public job board, and we follow up the way you ask us to: call, text or email.

When you come in, bring:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID — you must be 21 or older to apply
  • Proof you are legally authorised to work in the United States
  • Your availability — the nights and hours you actually want to work
  • Any questions you have. Bring them; this is the part where we answer them

Whether you are already working in the industry or auditioning for the first time, tell us where you are when you apply.

Step 5: Know the terms before your first night

Entertainers at Knockouts Houston work as independent contractors (1099). That means you handle your own taxes, and it makes a club's terms — what it charges, what it expects, and how you are paid out — worth understanding in full before you start, wherever you dance.

Our guide to how exotic dancer earnings work covers house fees, tip-outs and taxes. Our guide to a safe, healthy club workplace covers security, your documents and the warning signs to walk away from.

Six questions to ask any club before you audition

  1. What does a shift cost me — house fee, tip-outs, anything else — and can I have it in writing?
  2. Who sets the price of a dance, and how and when am I paid for card sales?
  3. If a customer crosses a line, who removes them, and how fast?
  4. How are phones and cameras handled in the room?
  5. Who sees the copy of my ID, and where is it kept?
  6. Could I ever leave a shift owing the club money? The answer should be no.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum age to be an exotic dancer in Houston?

21. Texas Labor Code §51.016 bars a sexually oriented business from employing or contracting with anyone younger than 21. The City of Houston's permit page still lists 18, but both rules apply, so in practice you must be 21 to work at any Houston club.

Do you need a permit to be an exotic dancer in Houston?

Yes. Houston's sexually oriented business ordinance (Code of Ordinances chapter 28, article VIII) makes it unlawful to work as an entertainer without a city permit and makes the club responsible for checking. You apply in person at the Houston Permitting Center, 1002 Washington Avenue.

How long does a Houston entertainer permit take, and how long does it last?

The city says processing takes 2 to 5 business days, and your fingerprint background check has to pass before the permit is issued. The permit is valid for two years and is renewed the same way you applied.

Do independent contractors need the Houston entertainer permit?

Yes. The ordinance applies to any person who works as an entertainer, whatever the business arrangement. Texas law also requires the club to keep a copy of the photo ID of every independent contractor, not just its employees.

What ID do I need to dance at a club in Texas?

A valid government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth, such as a driver's license, a state ID card or a passport. The club must keep a copy on file and verify every employee and independent contractor through E-Verify. It keeps a copy, never your original.
